Being present to witness Meg and Christian’s Snow Canyon red rock elopement in St. George, Utah was such an honor. I’ve gotten to be side-by-side with them through a lot of life events and frankly, we never fail to EAT every time we shoot together. I love that their style leans more editorial because it pushes me to really get creative when we work together. It doesn’t hurt that they killed it with their styling and leaned into this western aesthetic. They really couldn’t be cooler!
We started their session at the sand dunes in Snow Canyon State Park. It was such a relief to get there and it was basically just us! This spot is great because it offers 360 views; you couldn’t look anywhere with beauty assaulting your eyeballs. We ran around the dunes for a little while and then continued on to the Petrified Sand Dunes. Out of nowhere, as the sun started to set, we were blessed with an INSANE neon orange, purple, and pink sunset. We couldn’t believe how perfectly it all came together!
If you are looking for spots in Southern Utah to plan your own red rock elopement, I highly recommend Snow Canyon as a contender! Most of the best views are just off the main road. For example, the rock formations at the Petrified Sand Dunes are just a short walk and mild rock climb (just more walking really) from the parking lot to get to a beautiful vantage point. The cliffs surrounding either side of the road would be perfect photo spots as well. There are tons of convenient parking lots up and down the park.
This might seem obvious, but you’ll need to factor in the weather when you’re planning your red rock elopement! My advice is to completely avoid the area from June through August. Temperatures stay consistently in the 90’s through the 120’s, even in the mornings and evenings. The sweet spot would be March through May or October through November. You’ll get the best balance of clear skies and (more) mild weather, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Images are a mix of digital and film! All color photos taken on Portra 400 120 and Kentmere Pan 400 B&W 120 on a Pentax 645nii. As always, all my film is developed and scanned by my friends at The Find Lab.
